Color is one of the most effective tools in making a design statement. We associate colors with different feelings, and different combinations can conjure different atmospheres.

Using the Color Wheel

Choosing the right color scheme can help us in making decisions regarding the furniture and décor. With a color wheel, determining the colors that match with each other can be made simple. A complementary color scheme makes use of colors opposite each other on the color wheel. When introducing contrast to a room, a complementary color is usually a good choice. Red, for example, goes with green, and blue goes with yellow. The stark contrast can make a room much brighter and livelier. High contrast schemes can enhance the formality.

On the other hand, an analogous color scheme makes use of colors next to each other on the color wheel. Red, for example, is next to orange, and blue is next to violet. These combinations can make a room seem more relaxing and so they ought to be used in bedrooms and other areas where people try to relax.

Drawing Inspiration from Nature

Aside from the color wheel, nature itself can be used as an inspiration. Different shades of orange and brown are reminiscent of autumn, while shades of yellow and blue are evocative of spring. Various hues of blue combined with white are also suggestive of the sky and the sea, while shades of green combined with brown mimic the colors of the trees.

Adding a Bit of Accent

Once you have chosen an assortment of colors to use, try adding a few black elements to enhance them. It can make the other colors pop.  Conversely, to increase the soothing quality of a space, white and beige can also be added. With these few colors in mind, apply the 60-30-10 rule. This suggests having 60% of the main color, 30% of the secondary color and 10% of the accent color.

Testing Out the Colors

At the supply store, see if you can request samples and swatches of the colors you have chosen. Placing these samples in the areas where they would be used can help you make sure that they would look good with the lighting available in the room.

Colors have a great impact on the look of a room and even on the performance of activities within that space. A good scheme can combine a variety of colors and evoke feelings appropriate to the style and function of a room. Drawing inspiration from different tools and the surroundings, choosing the right one can become very easy.
