We have all heard it before, “Less is more”. There really is truth to this strategy when used in interior styling. When this strategy is put into play, it accomplishes many ideals. It eliminates clutter, architectural details are highlighted and the space feels clean.

The biggest mistake most home owners have is allowing clutter to take over. Clutter makes a space look un-kept and dingy. Read along to find out how to accomplish the less is more strategy, and why it is important.

Clutter literally causes an interior to become dirty. This is because it attracts dust and dirt from the air. The more stuff in a room, the more time it takes to dust and clean. Having a stream line interior is easy to clean and most importantly it looks tidy!

When starting from scratch everyone has the initial instinct to fill up a room. This instinct leads to purchasing furniture and accessories that may not be right for the space, or are of lesser quality. The end goal is not just to fill in the holes, it is to purchase furnishings that are of good quality and a good fit for the space. When shopping for furnishings, reject the will to make an impulse purchase. Buy items that you truly love and feel a connection to. If the interior is already furnished, start by removing items from each room within your home. Either sell these items to consignment shops, donate them or have a yard sale. Selling items gives you the ability to gain extra money that can be put towards a good quality piece that will last for years, or even decades.

Commonly this strategy can have the effect of creating a stark or cold space. This can be fixed by incorporating nature and lighting. Allowing natural light in will warm up any space. If natural light is scarce, add a floor or table lamp with a warm colored bulb. The use of layering creates warmth as well. Make natural selections for floors such as, stone, terrazzo, cork or wood; then add a textured rug that you love!

All spaces benefit from having greenery. Real plants create cleaner indoor air quality and add life to the interior!

When in doubt take your time. Do not rush simply to fill a space. Get rid of items that you don’t love and make conscious choices when shopping. Quality should always be chosen over quantity. Make these changes in your interior and your quality of life will feel cleaner, controlled and streamlined!
