Fix Up a Special Girl’s Room

Written by creatingyourspace on . Posted in Design and Decorating

When your little girl starts to move out of the toddler stage and wants a room to reflect her feminine side, take a look at this simple and inviting approach. With a little effort you can create an old-fashioned space that is functional as well as inviting.

The dressing table shown here is inexpensive to create with just a little effort. Start by shopping at used furniture and thrift stores for a dressing table with drawers. Take your daughter along to help you find one in a style she prefers. Don’t’ worry about the finish – you can paint over anything.

Pull the drawers out and wash it down with wood soap and just a little water. Wipe it dry and let it sit overnight. The next day lightly sand the piece and wipe it down with a tack cloth. Prime and then paint it the color of your choice. A bright white sets the stage for plenty of pink, but you could be more daring with a light pastel in your daughter’s choice. If needed, replace the hardware with something more appealing.

A mirror is essential. If your dressing table didn’t have one, look for something in proportion to the table. Paint that to match if needed. This three-way mirror is nice for checking the back of a hairdo or dress.

The finish to this table comes from the silk flowers surrounding the mirror. Garlands in almost any choice of color or style can be found at fabric and hobby shops. With the addition of some pretty boxes and bottles, the dressing table is done.

To finish the rest of the room, carry the color and flower theme throughout. The curtain shown here has a simple pink ribbon to add color. A bedspread to match or in a rose pattern will fit the room’s style. Add an area rug in pink or roses on white to warm up the space, some hooks to hold necklaces or hair ribbons, and your little girl’s room is ready.
