Budget

The cost can play a significant role in some of our decisions.  It is essential to have a general understanding of the cost of different flooring options on the market.  Where carpet may be a more a budget-friendly option, there are always higher end carpets.  Whereas, when tile can be considered a more expensive investment, there are still several budget-friendly options available. 

Traffic

Another huge factor that goes into your decision making is the amount of traffic your space will see on a day-to-day basis.  There are several categories to consider: carpet, laminate, solid and engineered hardwoods, vinyl, linoleum, and tile.  Even with all these categories, all floors are made differently.  You can purchase carpet that is manufactured for commercial wear and tear or find carpet for moderate to light residential use.  All flooring is made different.  Deciding how heavy of traffic you have in your space can limit what flooring options you should consider.

Subfloor

Where will you be installing your flooring?  Not all flooring can be installed over concrete.  Floating floors are great to have installed over any surface; however, some flooring options may still need to be nailed down.  Know where and what floor you are installing over top.  Some carpets may need to be glued down, and others may allow pad.  Determine what is important to you for your home.
