August Gardening Tips

Written by creatingyourspace on . Posted in Curb Appeal, Summer

Summer can be brutally hot, but it can also be a great time to be outdoors and enjoy the sun. If you have a garden, you know how ruthless the sun can be on you as well as your garden. This is also the perfect time to put effort into your garden by evaluating, managing, and preparing for your plant life’s success. Here are four tips you cannot neglect during August to keep your garden alive and well:

Weeding and Watering

Weeds can take a toll of your garden. You should start checking for weeds again in August and remove any invasive plants. You do not want your hard work, at keeping your garden alive, to go to waste because of intrusive weeds. You also need to be extra giving on the amount of water this time of year.  Just like you in the August heat, your plants and soil can quickly become dry and dehydrated. Make sure to give your plants the proper amount of water to help them survive the intense heat.

Remove Deadheads

Not only do you need to remove spent flowers for an aesthetic purpose, but they can also impair sunlight to other plants. Removing the spent flowers on an annual basis can reward you with a much larger bloom into the fall.

Plant for Autumn Crops

If you plan on continuing your garden into next year and the fall, you should consider planting certain seeds in August. Plants that can be harvested in Autumn may need to be planted now. Plants that can tolerate a light frost should be planted now as well and can grow throughout the winter.

Test Your Soil

If you plan on continuing your garden for years to come, it may be a good idea to check your soil’s nutrient level. You want to make sure the right nutrients are in the soil to ensure your plants grow adequately.  You can test it yourself with a homemade kit or order one online to find out your soil’s pH levels.

August is a good month in the summer to make sure your garden is coming along properly. Maintenance is key to the success of your garden. Remember to hedge bushes and keep your garden well-watered throughout the scorching heat months. For more tips and tricks, visit us at Century Tile.

Flooring Elements to Consider Before Buying

Written by creatingyourspace on . Posted in Flooring

All floors respond differently to different environments.  You need to consider the pros and cons of each flooring option to know precisely what will or will not work in your home.  Where aesthetics may be your top priority, other elements like subfloor, traffic, and budget can limit your decision.  Today, we put together some essential elements and factors to consider before buying your new floors.  These are the right questions to ask yourself prior to your investment to help tailor your floors for you and your home’s needs.

Exposure to Sunlight

Carpet dyes, some vinyl, and hardwoods can all fade with sunlight.  While this may not be a deciding factor for you, it is an essential factor to consider.  Room’s that have uneven sun exposure can start to fade and become discolored – this can be easily fixed with blinds but should be taken into consideration.

Exposure to Water

There are many excellent choices for bathrooms and kitchens.  It is important to take into play how your flooring will handle against water.   With new technology, luxury vinyl has become an excellent option for these wet environments.  You may also want to consider tile, linoleum, or other vinyl options.  Floors like hardwood and carpet typically will respond poorly in these atmospheres.

Extreme Temperatures

Temperature can also be a deciding factor.  Some floors, such as hardwoods, will expand and contract.  Extreme fluctuating temperatures are very wearing on some floors, and this can also be important to consider with carpets.  Floors like carpet are not ideal for bringing all the way up to a fireplace.  Areas, where embers or sparks may hit the ground, needs to be considered. Tile and other flooring options that are non-combustible should be considered for these areas.

Pet and Children Friendly

If you are a parent or a pet owner, you probably know the accidents that come with these privileges.  Not only having a floor that is accident-friendly but also safe for your loved ones is essential.  Consider soft surfaces for children or easy to clean surfaces for pets.  You should also consider the chemical makeup of different floorings.  Many manufacturers take pride in creating safe, eco-friendly options.

Understanding the flooring that you are considering can help ensure a positive experience.  Make sure you ask the right questions for your home and lifestyle.  Certain flooring is better for different environments.  If you have questions or concerns, ask your Century Tile sales representative.

We look forward to working with you!
