What Makes Carpet Soft?

Written by creatingyourspace on . Posted in Carpet

While hard surface floors have many advantages, carpet will always be an option that people love putting in their homes. Carpet is a soft flooring choice, which can make a room feel warmer and more inviting. When shopping for carpet, there can be many options and avenues to explore. Not every carpet is created equally. If you are looking for a soft and comfortable option, there are several things you should know.

Understanding Carpet Fibers

Nowadays, there are many styles of carpets. The technology in carpet engineering has dramatically improved over the last couple of years. Carpet is created through textile filaments bundled together to create a fiber. These fibers are then constructed together to create your carpet. Intricate and fine fibers can create a softer carpet, whereas more bulky fibers can lead to less soft carpet. You can find these fibers in most commercial carpets and carpet tiles. If you are looking for a soft carpet, try to find a carpet with fine fibers. You should also consider softer materials like wool or nylon if a soft carpet is your primary concern; however, polyester has greatly improved and can be soft as well.

Is Too Soft Bad?

Softer does not necessarily mean weaker. For a long time in the industry, the softer the fibers, the less resilient the fibers were. Resilience is the fibers’ ability to bounce back to their regular position after being crushed by foot traffic or furniture. Finding a soft carpet with good resilience is essential.

The Right Padding

If you have ever had a rug in the garage or basement, you know that carpet on concrete does not feel very soothing. Nothing is as important as carpet padding when it comes to creating your soft surface. Some homebuyers will skimp out on upgrading their carpet pad when purchasing flooring. If you are looking for the softest, most comfortable surface, you need to invest in good padding. Heavy 8oz padding is excellent for your carpet to feel great even when you lay or sit on it.

Carpet is a great option for adding comfort to your home. Ask your Century Tile sales representative for more insight on soft carpet fibers, and remember to get quality padding to help with the softness and longevity of your flooring.

Choose Flooring With Babies in Mind

Written by creatingyourspace on . Posted in Carpet

Are babies a part of your life? If you have children, they’re probably front and center. But even if we’re talking about grandchildren, nieces and nephews, or the children and grandchildren of friends or neighbors, most of us are lucky enough to have children in their lives.

You may keep cookies in the kitchen for little visitors, or possibly a few toys around for entertaining any children who happen into your home. Grandparents, of course, want to make their homes a special haven for the little ones in their lives – available to spoil without any need for the discipline they provided their own children.

When you’re making choices about how to keep your home inviting for the smallest members of your life, think about your flooring. Children play, crawl and learn to walk on the floor. Their shoes just don’t stay on for long and they run around in bare feet or footie PJ’s. Do you have carpeting or rugs that provide a comfy special place for the children in your life?

When you’re choosing flooring, think about how it feels as much as how it looks. Run your hands across the surface and press down. Does that rug or carpeting invite bare feet? Would you like to lie down and snuggle with your best baby doll on that floor? Or maybe just read a story to your baby brother.

Sweet soft babies deserve soft carpeting or rugs for their play and learning. Make your best effort to give them that along with all of the support and consideration you can.

Bright Colors and Light Wood

If you love bright light colors, you may have been frustrated about finding flooring that can handle a variety of vivid shades. White carpeting would be beautiful, but demanding to maintain. Most tile has a cream or beige tone, and white tile in a living area might feel cold, no matter how much color you add.

Light wood floors provide the perfect solution. As this photo shows, a light floor can handle bright colors while still feeling warm and inviting.

This particular color is similar to Pantone’s color for 2011: Honeysuckle. Pantone provides many color palettes for graphic artists and designers. The appealing reddish pink works beautifully with a light wood. Notice also how well the light blue shade on the book cover connects with the maple floor.

The other advantage to a light wood floor is flexibility. By choosing neutral shades for the primary furniture and bringing in color through pillows, area rugs and accessories, you could easily change the colors in this room to suit your mood or the season.

When you’re planning a child’s bedroom, consider light wood. As their tastes and color preferences change, this wood choice will continue to work with their plans. Add to that the durability and longevity of wood, and you have the perfect flooring for today’s and tomorrow’s needs.
