It’s Summer Time

Written by creatingyourspace on . Posted in Care and Maintenance

Summer is here! While most of us would like to laze in the sun and just relax, there are still projects at home that need tending to. Here is a quick list of tips to keep your home, yard and hardscaping in shape for the warm months ahead – without too much effort.

Freshen the kitchen – each time you empty the trash spray your trash cans with an anti-bacterial solution. Keep a dryer sheet at the bottom of each can. It will absorb odors and spills.

In the garden – if you haven’t added mulch yet, now’s the time to do it. Put a one to two-inch layer of mulch on vegetable and flower gardens after plants have emerged in the spring to help conserve moisture.

Organize toys – sift through the beach toys, yard toys and recreational equipment, making sure everything is in good shape. If not, fix, replace or toss. And if you’re not using something, donate it now so other families can enjoy all summer long.

Inspect the roof – on a dry day, check your roof for missing shingles and damaged flashing. Inspect seals around vents, skylights and chimney for leaks. Repair as necessary. Look in your chimney to ensure that no critters have taken up residence.

Clean the shower – to remove hard-water scale or mildew on shower and faucet heads, soak them in vinegar. If the head isn’t removable fill a plastic bag with vinegar and position it over the faucet, taping the bag shut to let it soak.

Don’t forget the dryer vent – just as in winter, it’s time to move your dryer away from the wall and vacuum behind it. Remove the tube that attaches to the machine and clear out the lint. Finally, use a shop vac to clean the outside vent, too.

Repair railings and stairs – all steps, porches and banisters should be inspected at least once a year. Repair any place that shows signs of wear, loose nails or cracked boards.

Defrost the freezer – most freezers need a good defrosting and clean-out twice a year. Remove everything and store in a cooler. Throw away food older than six months. Defrost the freezer and use a gentle cleaning solution to wipe down the walls and door.

If you tackle one of these projects every few days, you’ll get this list done in no time and still be able to relax and enjoy the sun.

Some of you like to do home improvements on your own, or at least you want to understand the process of laying tile, preparing a sub floor, knowing what tools are needed and which adhesive works best. But who has time to spend hours on-line or at your nearby hardware store trying desperately to find someone who may know a little something?

Fear not, Century Tile has “Pete the Pro”. Pete Lettecci, also known as “Pete the Pro” has installed ceramic tile for over 30 years. Since 1995 he has shared his knowledge and experience training Century’s staff and conducting 240 customer installation-training seminars. In his free time Pete responds to customer inquiries and tests potential new tools, setting materials and products.

Even if you don’t have time to check out one of Pete’s seminars, and they are quite useful, Pete has a series of videos on our website. He also has a list of commonly asked questions with very detailed answers. If you have a question that is not listed, you can post it and Pete will respond. How cool is that? A pro at your fingertips.

Pete teaches several workshops a week at each of our locations. He teaches classes at 7pm during the week and at 11am on Saturdays.

Please come and meet “Pete the Pro” or post your question on line. We want to help you make your ceramic tile project as easy as possible.

DIY Demo Event

Written by creatingyourspace on . Posted in Events

Come join us! We’re having a factory do-it-yourself demonstration day at all 12 Century locations on May 22 from 11am to 3 pm.

We are bringing in factory experts to talk and demonstrate how easy it is to install their products. More importantly, is the fact we will give each customer the opportunity to try it themselves. We are setting up a 4’ by 8’ table and we will simulate an area that would represent a room with four walls. We will pre-cut the products for you and let you play! It is a great way to take the mystery out of installing a product yourself. The factory expert will be there to help you work through the process.

This event is sponsored by Armstrong, so not only will you have the opportunity to try the installation yourself, but you will have the opportunity to talk directly to the factory!

We feel like it seems most people are feeling the crunch of the economy; so we thought we would focus on how easy it is to install a floor yourself. It works out perfectly because Armstrong had recently launched their Luxe Plank Vinyl Flooring which is geared to the weekend warrior who wants to try their hand at installation. Since not everyone likes vinyl flooring, we are expanding the demonstration to include how to install Armstrong’s Lock & Fold flooring, plus the Armstrong Cushion Step sheet flooring.

Stay tuned for our next post with information on the products we will be working with in the demonstrations.
