Design By Era

Written by creatingyourspace on . Posted in Design and Decorating

Have you ever thought about finding a decade or era whose style and home decor resonate with you? Sometimes a fresh perspective and a new approach can help reinvigorate a redesign. It can be very hard to make a decision if you don’t know where to start and this can oftentimes stall your projects. But with a little help, these design ideas might help you get started again with a better idea of what you want to do.

One way to do this is to not feel boxed into just one era per room—feel free to play with mixing different eras to create a more layered look. Rustic dark wood and cabin like touches of decor can harken back to large hunting cabins and a more simple type of living. The addition of sleek modern technology such as a built in stainless steel stove in the kitchen or more modern pieces of furniture can keep your room from feeling dated.

Conversely, you could try using a light to gray wood flooring with wider planks and a matte finish can create a wonderfully modern look to your room. Retro pieces such as a brightly colored antiques from the 60’s can keep your modern design from feeling cold and lifeless. You might even try a rug with color and design that keeps the modern design feeling fresh and from falling flat.

The other approach is to commit to a decade entirely—if you have always loved the roarin’ 20s and want to go all out in recreating the decade you could try creating a bedroom that drips of the decade’s decadence and flapper style. Liven up the room with a decadent chandelier for lighting. Add a beautiful vanity with large mirrors. The possibilities are endless and this is just an example for one decade in particular.

There are so many ways to use the styles of eras or decades past to put together a design for your room that will tell a story or add more layers to your rooms final look. Try to think about what your style is and research past design trends to see if there is something out there for you that you didn’t even know existed.
