Hardwood vs. Engineered Hardwood Flooring

Written by creatingyourspace on . Posted in Hardwood and Laminate

In today’s flooring market, we not only have solid hardwood floors we also have engineered hardwood floors. Engineered wood is made from a thin, top layer of solid wood, while the base of the product is made of plywood. Engineered wood is durable while providing the same beautiful look found in traditional hardwood floors. If you are new to the concept of engineered hardwood, we wanted to explain the key differences between traditional and engineered hardwood. Let’s take a look!

Engineered Hardwood

  • The cost is less expensive than solid hardwood because of the plywood base. Regarding solid hardwood, you are paying for the entire plank of wood, compared to engineered the expensive layer is only on the top.
  • Versatility for installing engineered wood floors with a tongue and groove system by loosely laid or installed using glue. Engineered floors can be installed on all levels of the home. Also, engineered hardwoods do not expand and contract like solid hardwood floors.
  • Various finishes are offered from hand-scraped, textured, and smooth.
  • Engineered floors are more environmentally friendly than traditional hardwood floors.
  • Engineered hardwood holds up well against moisture, allowing homeowners to install hardwood floors in places they never imagined possible.

Traditional Hardwood

  • Hardwood floors can be refinished over and over with the results looking like the day you bought it.
  • Many homeowners love having beautiful, solid hardwood floors in their home.
  • Solid hardwood floors are made from 100% wood and are more expensive. If you are not concerned with budget, solid hardwood floors may be the best choice for you.
  • Solid hardwood floors have more of a specific process for installing than engineered wood floors.
  • Solid hardwood floors will expand and contract with the weather and over time.

Light Wood in a Contemporary Space

Written by creatingyourspace on . Posted in Design and Decorating, Hardwood and Laminate, Kitchen and Bath

Screen Shot 2014-01-26 at 3.58.05 PMLight hardwood species like ash, alder and beech are popular choices in contemporary furniture design.  We’ve all seen it at a certain Swedish chain known for contemporary and inexpensive design.  The pale wood has a decidedly Scandinavian feel to it. Both ash and beech are popular choices for cabinets.

Pale wood on vertical elements like cabinets and horizontal elements like counters and floors create a nice flow throughout living spaces.  Light wood cabinets will seamlessly blend with the floors. A mix of gray stone, maybe soapstone or concrete, and pale wood on the counters can offer a nice contrast between light and dark, warm and cool.  You can be strategic and contrast certain areas if you want to focus on a specific area of the room, too.

Since we’re talking about light wood and gray accents and they’re both neutrals, pops of color would really stand out in the space. You could use bold artwork or incorporate bright colored décor around the space.  The colors would make for a nice addition but be careful not to take over the simple two-toned color palette created by the pale woods and deep grays we’ve been discussing.

The Patina of Wood

Written by creatingyourspace on . Posted in Hardwood and Laminate

18497512If you love wood, take a look at the variety of wood surfaces in this room. Even though this scene is a restoration of a log cabin, it provides some valuable insight into the variety of types and finishes of wood, plus it’s a fun room to admire.  Yes, you could even partially emulate it in your own home.

To start, check out the walls. As a log cabin, these are actual logs hand-scraped to smooth the inside surfaces with some sort of mortar to fill in the gaps. If you like this look, check out the rich variety of hand-scraped flooring now available. It provides this warm, handcrafted look.

The floor in this room has been scrubbed and scrubbed to the point that there is no longer any gloss left. In spite of this, the flooring still has personality thanks to the rich character of the planks that comprise it. This floor is in good shape, so it could probably be brought back to a rich appearance. However, that would not be characteristic of the era it represents.

The table absolutely glows with a rich patina earned over time. This simple sturdy table probably served as counter space for cooking and the dinner table for meals. It also handled homework and possibly some home schooling and a place to cut out fabric for most or all of the family’s clothes.

This is the original open-concept home, when the total living space consisted of one room with many uses. Wood, as the most common material available, is the primary decorating element. As you admire today’s wood floors and furniture, it’s important to remember where and when the style really started here in the United States.

Looking Through an Entryway

Written by creatingyourspace on . Posted in Design and Decorating, Hardwood and Laminate, Tile

The view in this photo is inviting, but what makes it special is the archway that we get to look through. It serves as a frame for the street and creates a personal sense to what we see.

Our homes have natural vistas also, and it’s a good idea to stop sometimes and take a look at how things look through our doorways and openings. It may give you new approaches to your décor.

When you look through a door or archway, the most noticeable element is the flooring. As you can see from this photo, the rough street pulls your eye through the space to the doorway at the end. In the same way your floor will draw the eye through your rooms.

Many floors such as wood and tile provide natural lines for our eyes to follow into a room. Take a look along those natural lines to make sure they end at a view you want your guests to see.

In most cases our rooms are not long enough to create the vista this photo provides, but it is important to make sure people’s eyes are drawn to the focal point of your choice in the room. If you haven’t planned a focal point, looking through doorways is a good starting point for creating one.

Finally, find a few interesting elements in the room for the eye to rest on and enjoy. In the photo, we have the painted posts at the end of the street and the bicycle leaning against the right wall. Little touches like this make the view interesting, and can make your rooms special.
